Vladimír Sobotka to return to the Blues?

by Jeremy Karp

Ever since the St. Louis Blues were eliminated by the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Finals, they (along with Blues fans) have been looking for something that could prove to be good news.

Now, they just might have gotten some.

An expected announcement plans to be coming soon that Vladimír Sobotka will be returning to the St. Louis Blues after spending two seasons in the KHL, playing for the Avangard Omsk. In 97 games, he garnered a total of 72 points.

The St.Louis Blues organization still hold his rights for another season, but the 28-year-old is eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer. If the veteran Sobotka returns, he’ll earn $2.725 million dollars, all of which are against the salary cap.

On Friday, Team Czech Republic announced Sobotka will be a member of their team in the World Cup of Hockey taking place in Toronto, starting on September 17th.

The Czech forward was drafted 106th overall back in 2005 by the Boston Bruins. Sobotka split a few seasons between the NHL/AHL before heading to St.Louis for full-time duties in 2010-11, where he had moderate success with a team in the process of building a constant winner. During his first season with the Blues, he played in 65 games and scored seven goals to go along with 22 assists. He slowed down a bit in his second season with St. Louis, he scored five goals and 15 assists in 73 games.

Sobotka has 123 points in 381 career regular season games, and 12 points in 40 playoff contests.

Following his second season, he played for the Slavia Praha in the Czech Republic for one year.

Afterwards, he decided to return for two more seasons during which he scored a combined 17 goals and 35 assists in 109 total games.

Stay tuned for more updates as they come out regarding Sobotka’s return to the St. Louis Blues.
