Peguero, Garcia Power Memphis Past Round Rock

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis trailed Round Rock 4-2 heading into the sixth inning Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park in Memphis, but an Anthony Garcia solo home run in the sixth made it 4-3 and a Carlos Peguero three-run blast in the eighth powered the Redbirds to a 6-4 victory.

The win is Memphis’ third of the season when trailing after seven innings. The Redbirds had three wins when trailing after the seventh frame in the entire 2015 season. On Saturday night, Memphis was on the wrong side of a pair of home runs in a 3-0 loss to the Express.

Garcia finished the game 3-for-4 with a double to go along with the home run. Greg Garcia was 2-for-4 with two runs, and Nick Martini was a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.

Juan Gonzalez picked up his second win by working the final two outs of the seventh and starting the eighth inning. Sam Tuivailala relieved Gonzalez in the ninth and struck out the two batters he faced for his second save of the season.

Round Rock scored four runs in the fourth inning off J.C. Sulbaran and reliever Ryan Sherriff, which came after Memphis opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first when Charlie Tilson and G. Garcia both singled and came around to score.

But after those four runs, Sherriff, Dean Kiekhefer, Gonzalez and Tuivailala allowed just six Express baserunners in their final five at bats to give the Memphis offense, which came into the game scoring only one run over its last 19 innings, time to come back.

Memphis and Round Rock conclude their four-game series with a pair of 6:35 p.m. (CT) games on Monday and Tuesday. Jeremy Hefner (2-0, 2.30) is scheduled to start on Monday night for the Redbirds, and Tuesday’s game is King Cotton $1 Hot Dog Day.
