Moss’ late home run not enough in loss

They may not have the best record in baseball, but if one were to make an argument over the hottest team in baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals would be up on top of the list. Over the past four games entering Wednesday night, the Cardinals scored 41 total runs (only one game without double-digit runs scored).

On a night where the Blues were playing the Blackhawks right down the road in the beginning of the NHL playoffs, the Cardinals were looking for their fifth straight win, as they took on the Brewers once again.

But this time the results were different than on Monday’s opener.

In the top of the ninth inning, with two outs, and closer Trevor Rosenthal on the mound, the reliever made arguably his biggest mistake of the young season, when Domingo Santana blasted a home run 440 feet to center field, the longest home run he has hit.

The starters for the game were Mike Leake (0-1, 8.31) and Chase Anderson (1-0, 0.00).

“I made a mistake over the middle that he was ready to hit,” Rosenthal said. “And he put a good swing on it.”

Just a half inning earlier, veteran Brandon Moss hit the team’s fourth pinch-hit home run of the season, tying their entire 2015 total. The home run tied the game at 4-4, on an evening that was really back and fourth between the two teams who are in the middle of the pack in the National League Central.

The Brewers starter, Anderson, bounced back well after a rough beginning of the game, when he allowed three unearned runs, two of which off of the bat of Randal Grichuk, who hit a two-run double, sending the Busch Stadium crowd into a frenzy.

“I felt good coming out of the bullpen, so I knew it was going to be a good night for me,” Anderson said. “I just tried to do my job to keep us in the game and good things happen when you do that.”

On ThursdayJaime Garcia (0-0, 6.00) will start the finale of the three-game series. Garcia is 10-3 in his career in April starts. Wily Peralta (0-1, 9.00) will make his third start of the season as well. He is 4-8 with a 4.74 ERA in 13 starts against St. Louis.
