Reports have just came out that the Cardinals are interested in acquiring Ruben Tejada from the Mets. Adam Rubin was first on this report.
Tejada, 26, has played 6 years in the MLB, all with the Mets. Last year, he played in 116 games, batting 369 times, with 94 hits, 23 doubles, 3 home runs, 28 runs batted in, 38 walks, 70 strikeouts, and held a .261 batting average.
Personally, I think that Diaz and Gyorko have performed very well in Spring Training so far, but if Mozeliak goes after Tejada, then apparently they haven’t performed good enough.
Filling the SS hole internally, could help in a few ways. Not only is it “cheaper”, but it gives Diaz a chance to show what he can do in a full season, or Gyorko a chance to play on an everyday basis and show what he can really do.
The asking price for Tejada will be the determining factor for the Cardinals. The Mets have an abundance of infielders, so they are more than likely shopping him anyways. The Cardinals aren’t in dyer need of adding a SS, so it won’t kill them to stay internal. But apparently, if its at the right price, the Cardinals are interested in adding a SS. What the Mets would want in return, I am not sure of. They don’t appear to need starting pitching or infielders. So maybe some (relief) pitching prospects, or possibly an outfield prospect.
It will be interesting to see if the talks continue or if the Cardinals back out, but at this point there are just rumors going around.
Do you think the Cardinals need to acquire a SS? Do you think Ruben Tejada is the right choice?
