Rams request to interview Browns’ OC DeFilippo

by Jeremy Karp

The St. Louis Rams have requested permission to interview current Browns’ offensive coordinator John DeFilippo for the same offensive coordinator job Frank Cignetti was fired from on Dec. 7th. The request was first reported on by Ian Rapoport on Tuesday evening.

Following Cignetti’s firing, Rob Boras was promoted to offensive coordinator, and suddenly, the Rams’ offense began to improve. However, despite the late strides made, the team still finished dead last in total offense during the 2015 season.

While Boras could still remain on hand as the offensive coordinator, the Rams will look to outside options and see what’s available. In fact, in the same report, Rapoport stated Boras could very well remain on the team as offensive coordinator.

As for DeFilippo, the 37-year old coach has had many years of experience as a quarterbacks coach and has worked with a variety of quarterbacks. Last year, he was hired as the Browns’ offensive coordinator following three years with the Raiders organization. He has also worked with the New York Giants and Jets, working with quarterbacks ranging from Derek Carr to Josh McCown.

Despite the Browns’ offensive struggles last season, they finished with higher averages on offensive yards per game and passing yards per game.

It is unknown when the interview would take place if the request is granted.
