NFL Trade Rumors: Why Alshon Jeffery to the Rams Makes Sense

by Jeremy Bowen

The St. Louis Rams offense is slowly but surely coming along. The development of the explosive Tavon Austin and emergence of rookie running back Todd Gurley; arguably one of the best WR-RB duos in the NFL, are the main reasons why the Rams offense blossoms. The offensive line is slowly but surely coming along as well, as multiple early round draft picks have been invested into it over the last couple years. But the offense is missing one thing. An explosive big time receiver.

With all due respect, but Kenny Britt and Brian Quick do not fill that void. This is where the Rams trade tactics come in. GM Les Snead has made some good trades in recent memory (Nick Foles trade, RGIII/draft picks trade, etc.). This is one of the times where Snead uncharacteristically has to give a little more to get what he wants.
Alshon Jeffery makes sense here. For years, I didn’t think not having a big play receiver was really a problem. I don’t even think it’s a major problem right now but with the addition of Alshon, think of his offense: QB Nick Foles with speedster WR Tavon Austin, rookie star RB Todd Gurley and deep threat WR Alshon Jeffery. This would open up the playbook even more that it already is for Frank Cignetti.

Jeffery is also in the final year of his rookie contract. When healthy, he has proven that he can be an elite receiver in the NFL. Assuming he doesn’t get injured this season, Alshon is going to be offered some big bucks in free agency this offseason. The Rams probably could not afford his asking price then.

But here’s why it makes sense to get him for the second half of the 2015 season: The Rams are 4-3 and in the race for both the NFC West and/or a wildcard spot in the playoffs; something they haven’t been in for years.  Adding Jeffery would make an offense that’s currently ranked 29th in the league in points scored on offense flourish. Teams would load up the box for Gurley and a play action bomb to Jeffery from Foles would work tremendously.
The Rams are in it the playoff hunt, regardless if they are able to add Jeffery or not. But the addition of Jeffery would make this offense even more explosive than it already is. The defense is solid, there’s not a question about that. The offense is inconsistent and questionable. A big name receiver like Jeffery could change things big time for this Rams offense.
