Cardinals Activate Jaime Garcia From DL; Option Sam Tuivailala To Memphis

by Press Release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have activated left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia (left groin strain) from the 15-day disabled list and that they had optioned right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala to Memphis (AAA) following last night’s game. Garcia is slated to start tonight’s game against Cincinnati.

Garcia, who missed 20 games since going on the disabled list July 4, is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts this season – the last coming on June 24 at Miami.

Garcia, 29, worked 5.0 scoreless innings in an injury rehabilitation start for Peoria (A) last Thursday (July 23), teaming with two Chiefs relievers on a combined no-hitter. Garcia fanned six batters in that start, allowing just one base-runner (hit batsman), while throwing 58 pitches.

Tuivailala (0-1, 1.80 ERA) was unscored upon in his last eight appearances (8.0 IP) for the Cardinals, striking out seven.

Every time the Cardinals activate another pitcher off the injury list, they someone down who has been very effective. Tuivalaila hasn’t been scored on in his last 8 appearances! I’m all for activating Garcia, no gripe there. But why do we hang on to Choate and keep sending these other more effective people up and down on a yo-yo? Lefthanded hitters (who Choate is allegedly VERY good at getting out) are hitting right around .250 against him, and we keep letting him occupy a valuable spot on our 25-man active roster.
