St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the club has signed defenseman Jordan Schmaltz to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Schmaltz, 21, finished his junior year at the University of North Dakota this past season. The 6’2, 189-pound defenseman ranked third on the club with 28 points including a team-leading 24 assists in 42 regular season games, while he led North Dakota to their second consecutive Frozen Four appearance in the NCAA Tournament. During his collegiate career overall, Schmaltz accumulated 64 points (13 goals, 51 assists) in 125 regular season games, while earning back-to-back NCAA Second Team All-Star honors in 2014 and 2015.
Prior to attending North Dakota, Schmaltz spent parts of three seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL), including stints with Sioux City and Green Bay. In his USHL rookie campaign, Schmaltz was named a 2011 First Team All-Star as he led the League’s defensemen in scoring. In 2012, Schmaltz earned a second consecutive First Team All-Star selection, while he captured the USHL’s Clark Cup with Green Bay.
Internationally, the Madison, Wisconsin, native captured a gold medal with the United States at the 2010 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. He also made back-to-back appearances with the U.S. at the 2011 and 2012 World Junior A Challenges.
Schmaltz was originally drafted by the Blues in the first round, 25th overall, of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
