Saint Louis starting pitcher Zach Girrens threw 7.1 shutout innings, striking out nine, as the Billikens topped Davidson 6-1 on the road. Girrens (4-1) picked up the win as the Billikens rise to 17-10 overall and 4-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference games.
Girrens allowed six baserunners all game, three of which came in the eighth inning. He allowed two hits (both singles), two walks and hit two batters. It is Girrens’ third outing of the season in which he struck out eight or more
Saint Louis struck first in the third inning when Alex King scored on a ground out.
In the fifth inning, Braxton Martinez hit a two-run single, to give SLU a 3-0 lead through five.
The Billikens tacked on two more runs in the seventh. One on an RBI double from Jake Henson and the other on an RBI single from Josh Bunselmeyer.
Saint Louis scored its final run on a solo home run from Mike Vigliarolo in the ninth. It was his first homer of the season and the 20th of his career. Vigliarolo becomes the 12th Billiken to notch 20 career home runs.
The Wildcats hit a solo homer of their own in the ninth, drawing the score to its final 6-1 tally.
Next up for the Billikens is a mid-week showdown against Missouri Valley Conference foe Bradley on Tuesday, March 31. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Peoria, Ill.
