Saint Louis FC finish preseason on high note.

by Matthew Bird

It was a long time coming but well deserved as Saint Louis FC came from behind to beat Tulsa Roughnecks on the road 2-1 Saturday night.

A week later on from the exhibition game in St Louis that saw Tulsa win 2-0, it was a little revenge for Dale Schilly’s team. The game however started very similarly to last weeks with St Louis having all the possession but Tulsa scored against the run of play again when Adam Black stuck to give the Roughnecks the lead going into halftime.

With new signing Brandon Barklage running the game in midfield, Saint Louis kept having chances which were frustratingly missed or saved by the Tulsa goalkeeper Zac Lubin.

After 75 minutes however, Saint Louis had a corner, floated in a simple flick on past the keeper only to hit the post and scrambled away. The clearance fell to Barklage who rifled in a shot which was spilled by Lubin to Saint Louis forward Jeremie Lynch who fired the ball home to tie the game at one goal each.

In the last minute of the game it was Barklage and Lynch who combined again and Lynch found himself in space at the top of the box to shoot the ball into the corner of the net to ensure the victory.

It leaves STLFC 2-2 in preseason play, with wins at SIUE and Tulsa, and losses to Indy 11 and Tulsa. The team now gears up to face Louisville City FC at Slugger Field in Louisville at 3pm EDT on Saturday 28th March. This will be the first of four meeting with the “Elsie” who are Saint Louis nearest rivals in the eastern conference of the United Soccer League. Approximately 80 fans from the “St Louligans” supporters group are making the trip for this historic season opener between the two expansion teams.

Anyone interested in making the trip to Louisville to support Saint Louis FC are advised that the visiting St Louis fans will be in section 126 of Slugger Field.

The game may be viewed on the Louisville City youtube channel or accessed via the USLsoccer website
