Tommy Mason, 75, who played running back for the Rams from 1967-70, has passed away. Mason played 11 NFL seasons with the Vikings, Rams and Redskins. The first overall pick in the 1961 Draft, Mason rushed for 4,203 yards and 32 touchdowns and caught 214 passes for 2,324 yards and 13 scores during his NFL career.
“Tommy was an enormous talent. He was a great player, a humble man and an outstanding teammate. I will always cherish the years I spent with Tommy,” Fran Tarkenton said in a statement issued by the Vikings.
“It’s always saddening when we lose a member of the Rams family,” Rams General Manager Les Snead said. “On behalf of the entire organization, our condolences go out to Tommy Mason’s family and loved ones.”
“Tommy was a great teammate and valued member of the Washington Redskins,” Redskins President Bruce Allen said. “Our entire organization sends its condolences to his family.”
Mason’s Rams totals included 866 rushing yards and four touchdowns as well as 51 catches for 526 yards.
Mason, a native of Lake Charles, La., is survived by his wife, Karen, and his three sons, Buck, Ryan and Taylor, his grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
