Several reports have confirmed the death of Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras. His agent, Brian Mejia, confirmed the 22-year-old’s death. He was driving in Puerta Plata in the Dominican when the accident happened. His girlfriend, 18 year-old Edilia Arvelo, was also killed in the accident. Taveras did not have any ID with him, and relatives had to identify that it was him. Dionisio Soldevila of ESPN Deportes had these tweets following the death:
@dSoldevila: “Confirmed: Cardinals’ prospect Oscar Taveras was killed in a car accident along with hits girlfriend in Puerto Plata.”
@dSoldevila: “Taveras was driving a 2014 red Chevrolet Camaro when he crashed. He did not have ID on him. Was identified by relatives”

Cardinals press release of the death:
In a sense, I feel like these young players are like our kids. We watch them grow up in front of our eyes, maturing as players and as people. It is a sad day in Cardinal Nation and in the world of baseball.
