As the postseason draws nearer, Cardinal Nation is beginning to feel the weight that was once on their shoulders begin to dissipate. The Cardinals have 18 games left in the regular season, and they are showing nothing but promise as October beckons.
Winning 9 of their last 10 games, it seems as if everyone on the Cardinal team has had a hand (or two or three) in some of those wins. The defense has been outstanding, with the guys you usually don’t hear about having their names called. Randal Grichuk has been known to make a diving catch or two, and don’t get me started on Bourjos. His speed has shown to be a benefit not only on the base paths, but also in centerfield.
Not to take away from the big name guys we all know and love. They’ve been doing their jobs, but hey, these other quiet guys, they’re starting to make some noise. Look at Peter Bourjos’s batting numbers in the last 10 games; he is 9 for 19, that’s an average of .474. He has also scored 5 of the Cards 45 runs during that stretch and has 4 RBIs. Not too shabby for a guy who is kind of on the second string of things. When opponents see him on base, they have to cringe, and I’m not just talking about Lucroy.
So, who else is coming on strong during this time? Jon Jay has kept up his hitting consistency, Daniel Descalso has been known to get some hits and drive in some runs during this stretch, and has also been helping the team out at first base (who knew he could play there, too?!) while Adams was recovering from an oblique strain. Speaking of that oblique strain, maybe that oblique was just trying to get a little rest to make sure and hit some really super duper long range home runs?
As I’ve already mentioned, Randal Grichuk has proven to have some impressive defensive skills, as well as running the bases. The thought of Grichuk and Bourjos running bases together in the post season may just send me into a happy dance.
Looking at these guys, I guess those people were right, there’s no “I” in team…
As always, Go Cards!

Getting help from the bench at the perfect time. I would hate to be Matheny trying to set the line-up with all of this quality production from the entire team.
