Despite not scoring an equalizer after trailing at halftime, Saint Louis turned in a strong performance in a 1-0 loss to Northwestern Sunday afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Billikens (3-3) out-shot the Wildcats (4-1-1) 12-5 in the second half, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. SLU tallied advantages of 15-13 overall and 8-4 in shots on goal for the game.
Saint Louis fired six shots in the final 12 minutes, including three on frame in a flurry that lasted just over a minute. But Northwestern goalkeeper Lauren Clem (eight saves) was up to the task as she posted her third shutout of the season.
Northwestern’s Kim Jerantowski, assisted by Katie Landgrebe, scored her second goal of the year at the 30:28 mark. Jerantowski took Landgrebe’s cross from the far right side on the run and finished with a header.
Danielle Tolmais led SLU with four total shots and three shots on goal. Lindsay Elking directed two of her three shots on frame, and Cristina Rodriguez also notched three shots. Hanna Benben made three saves.
The Billikens return to action Sunday, Sept. 14, as Murray State visits Hermann Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
