The tables are starting to spin in Cardinal town, ladies and gents. Moves are being made left and right on this team stuck in neutral heading into a series finale with the Cubs this afternoon.
On Friday, Yadi Molina was activated and the Cards kept A.J. Pierzynski and Tony Cruz on the roster. A good move because A.J. can play first and is a good bat off the bench.
Michael Wacha starts in Springfield for the Double A team today. With Memphis making the playoffs, Wacha will most likely get another start on Friday. After which, he could be promoted to the parent club on September 10th or 11th for a start in the bigs.
Jason Motte is also going to Springfield to start a rehab assignment. He has been out for a couple of weeks with a back injury. Hopefully his return doesn’t bring back the long ball to the bullpen. I am talking about 7 home runs allowed in 21 innings.
Kevin Siegrist was called up to the team today after being sent to Memphis to work on his pitches due to a rough patch after his return from the disabled list earlier this month. He will help the bullpen if he is the Siegrist of 2013 and not the burnt down young arm from the World Series and 2014.
Pete Kozma was called up to help with infield depth and give Mike Matheny a defensive guy to slide into games and a pinch runner. His marvelous bat is still a question mark.
Nick Greenwood, Marco Gonzales and Tyler Lyons were sent to Double A Springfield today but will be back in 48 hours when the minor league team’s season is over and rosters expand. There is no need to fuss there. In a couple of days, rosters can be packed with young fevers and those three guys will come back.
The Cards scored some runs last night. They scored more runs in one inning(9 in the 8th inning) than they had all week. A 13-2 romp means little if John Lackey gets bombed today and the bats take the afternoon off. The time to mess around, promote hope, give favors to declining pitchers, and be foolhardy is over folks. The time to be ruthless with the bat and greedy with the baseball is here.
The lineup today features Descalso at first base. He hasn’t been horrible lately but give me a break. If Matheny wants to get creative, put Peralta at third, Kozma at short and Carpenter at first base. Also, get Jon Jay in the #2 hole and Randal Grichuk out of it. Just a few lineup thoughts.
The Cards begin action one game out of first place in the Central Division. Go get it Cards.
Thanks for taking this in and have a good holiday.

MM’s got me miffed by sticking JJ in the 8 spot. I hate to think of all the runs he’s sacrificed by doing just that instead of placing him in the top of the order.
