Squeaking by…

by Megan Foster

Let me warn you, if you don’t want to read a rant about Trevor Rosenthal, don’t read this post. That is your warning. If you agree, great. If you don’t, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

After being down 1-0 to the Pirates tonight, the Cards came back to score three runs in the top of the 7th, thanks to a couple of RBI singles by Jay and Holliday, to take the lead 3-1.  No scoring happened between that top of the 7th and the top of the 9th, but then comes the bottom of the 9th and here comes Rosenthal…..sigh.

McCutchen comes to the plate and launches one out to left field. What do I do? Scream at the TV. I’m tired of seeing this happen, tired of seeing Rosenthal come in for the 9th and try to give one away. Yes, he has 39 saves. Great, grand, wonderful. He is pretty consistent with getting the save….just barely.

Next Pirate up? Strike out.  One after that? Walk. “Here we go again,” I think to myself. Well, low and behold, the Cards get a ground out to the pitcher and then a fly out to center. Game over, but not without Rosenthal making it interesting….again.

Normally, I would say something like, “Now, don’t get me wrong…” or “At least…” but I’m not saying either of those things. I’ve been ranting about Rosenthal closing since he sort of officially became the closer. He just gets by. I could look up some really impressive stats and show you exactly what his numbers look like, but I’m not going to. I can tell you what I see day in and day out with this guy. I see it with my own two eyes.

You can get mad at me about pointing out the obvious, you can shake your head at me, you can curse me, but these kind of saves, they won’t happen in the postseason. I’m posting this out of pure frustration. I’m glad for the win. I’ll be more glad if the Padres can beat the Brewers tonight.

On a happy side note, Yadi and Wacha are getting better. (That’s my attempt at optimism in a pessimistic post.)

As always, Go Cards!

Rosenthal has become the reincarnation of Isringhausen!!!!!

Agreed, have we forgotten Hrabosky, Sutter, Eckersley, Lee Smith, Worrell, etc. Many fans are so fickle. Rosenthal is tied for the Saves lead in the NL.

Yep on Izzy. I mentioned that on another board. Izzy almost gave me ulcers. Wonder what the writer thought about Izzy? Actually she prob wasn’t born back then. I do believe there must be someone else on the force that would be a better closer.

Sell him while he’s still on a lucky hot streak.

He’s no Mitch Williams

If you put him in to many games his arm will tire. Being the pitcher he is does not mean he can play night after night. The manager and pitching coach ARE responsible for their health. We all need rest.

Rosey on any given night/day can be a blessing, scary, frustrating, disappointing and/or infuriating.

he’s a closer, no?
