(NEW ORLEANS, LA) – With three straight wins this weekend, the St. Louis Surge powered its way to their first-ever national title.
The semi-pro basketball team won the 2014 Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) championship Sunday afternoon with an 81-69 win over the previously-unbeaten Auburn Flyers.
The 12-point title victory netted the Surge (14-1) the sweep in the eight-league bracketed tournament and handed Auburn (16-1) its first loss in the franchise’s two-year existence. Prior to Sunday’s game, Auburn had a 31-0 historical record.
On Saturday, the Surge defeated Fayetteville, 89-54, in the quarterfinals and Dade County, 83-80, in the semifinals to reach the championship game.
