The Gateway Grizzlies are pleased to announce that infielder Michael Massi had his contract purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday.
Massi, who inked his first pro contract with the Grizzlies on June 10th, becomes the 31st Grizzlies player signed by a Major League organization and the 11th since manager Phil Warren took over.
“We’re thrilled for Michael,” Warren stated. “He’s deserving of this shot and we know he will do well. Michael is a great player and person. Even though his stay here was short, he made an impact on our team.”
Massi turned 22 on Thursday and will report to Rookie Ball in the Cardinals organization.
The Powder Springs, GA native was batting .250 in four games with the Grizzlies. He also had two walks and scored two runs in his four games (three starts).
Massi batted .346 with five home runs and 35 runs batted in as a senior this year for Mercer University. He was named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year and is one of 16 finalists for the Brooks Wallace National Shortstop of the Year Award.
The Grizzlies enter action Thursday night in first place in the Frontier League West Division with a record of 20-10. Gateway has won a season-high five straight games, including seven straight at home. They are a league-best 15-3 at home.
