It’s still early in the season. Our boys in red have a pretty good starting record. With a couple of non-starters starting tonight’s game against Milwaukee, it was in the “cards” (pun intended) to be an interesting game. Jon Jay got the start in center for Bourjos, while Tony Cruz got the start behind the plate to give Yadi the night off. Lance Lynn was on the mound with a record of 2-0, while Garza was on the mound for the Brew Crew. Milwaukee started the night with the best record in the Major Leagues at 10-2, on a 9-game winning streak. It was also snowing in Milwaukee tonight at game time. Just trying to set the scene….
Some weird things seemed to be happening to keep the viewers entertained and the players on their toes tonight, and I guess you could say it started in the 2nd inning with Jhonny Peralta’s home run…..off the first pitch of the second inning. Not so odd, you may say, but we have to keep in mind, the Brewers have lost only two games all season, I didn’t (but maybe you did) see that scoring happening so easily and quickly.
Moving on to the fifth, saw an ejection of Matt Carpenter to begin the 5th. Whoa whoa whoa, wait one minute. Matt Carpenter was ejected for arguing balls/strikes with the home plate umpire? Matt Carpenter? Yes, that Matt Carpenter. When Matheny came out to argue it, I think he had a more interesting take on words than Carpenter did, but what do I know…he didn’t get tossed. Carpenter did. I guess you can blame it on the eclipse/blood moon, but the dome wasn’t even open.
Moving on to the top of the 6th, after some interesting base running by both Holliday and Adams, Jon Jay came to the plate with Peralta and Craig on first and second. With a half-swing, he padded the lead with a 3 run home run to put the Cards on top for the remainder of the game 4-0.
To add to the madness, there was some other craziness that happened in the top of the 7th, with someone flashing a greenish-colored light onto the face of Matt Holliday as he stood up at the plate. I do believe they think it was someone/something coming from right field. He ended up striking out after a short delay, and I don’t know if the perpetrator was ever caught, but for some reason, it just added to the crazy that was in Miller Park tonight.
Long story short, the Cards handed the Brewers their 3rd loss of the year, Lance Lynn his 3rd W of the season, and improved their record to 8-5 (now just two games back of Milwaukee for the NL Central). I think my head is still a little reeling from the oddness of tonight’s game, and that’s the best way I can describe it.
Eh, a win’s a win is a win.
Go Cards!
