Tides run all over Redbirds

by Alex Coil

The Memphis Redbirds dropped the series opener against the Norfolk Tides 6-1 on Tuesday night at Harbor Park. It is the fifth straight loss for Memphis, which is their longest losing streak of the season.

The Redbirds struck a run early on an RBI single from Cory Spangenberg in the top of the second inning, but that was all they mustered. The Tides responded immediately by tying the game in the bottom of the frame after a Yuniel Diaz double and a Robert Neustrum sacrifice fly. They pushed ahead in the fourth on an RBI groundout and Kelvin Guitierrez tallied a home run in the seventh.

Things unraveled in the eighth inning. Norfolk swiped four bases in the inning and had three-straight RBI hits with two-outs, scoring three runs in the frame. Memphis allowed five stolen bases on the night, which is a season high.

The Redbirds tallied just four hits on the night, as starter DL Hall and Logan Gillaspie (1-1) pitched three frames each, with Gillaspie earning the win and retiring nine of 10 hitters faced.

Aaron Brooks (0-1) took the loss in his first Triple-A start since 2018. He walked three and gave up two runs on five hits in 3.2 innings pitched.

Memphis looks to snap out of their slump on Wednesday, May 11. They will send RHP Johan Oviedo to the mound opposite LHP Zac Lowther. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35pm CDT.
