An Evening With Bob Costas

by SLU Baseball

Saint Louis University baseball had the honor of hosting Bob Costas last Friday night as part of the SLU Baseball Speaker Series. The event was held at the Pasta House on Delmar Blvd., and, on top of dinner, guests in attendance received a signed National Baseball Hall of Fame ball by Costas and a picture with him.

Dinner was served in a roundtable setup to about 30 guests, and then Costas led an open discussion full of jokes, stories, and responses to questions/statements brought up by the attendees.

“Clearly we were in the presence of greatness,” head coach Darin Hendrickson said. “It was an honor to hear him be so open about his amazing career and his lifetime in sports.”

Costas reminisced on topics including his time hosting the Olympics, broadcasting each of the four major sports, performance enhancing drugs, and tanking in baseball.

“We were so thankful that Bob allowed us his time to put on such a great event,” Hendrickson said. “I’m also very glad that we could honor Bill McDermott’s charitable foundation for his late-daughter, Mary, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 24.”

Part of the proceeds from the night went on to benefit SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

Costas is the fourth special guest of the SLU Baseball Speaker Series. In the previous years, the team has had Will McGee, Tony LaRussa and Ozzie Smith.
