The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon that they have recalled right-handed reliever Giovanny Gallegos from Memphis (AAA).
Gallegos, 27, was acquired by the Cardinals on July 29, along with lefty reliever Chasen Shreve, from the New York Yankees, and was a key fixture in the Memphis bullpen as they won their second consecutive Pacific Coast League title and the Triple-A National Championship Game.
The 6-2, 210-pound Gallegos, a native of Ciudad Obregón, Mexico, has appeared in 20 career games in the majors, including four this season, going 0-1 with a 4.75 ERA while striking out 32 in 30.1 innings pitched. In his four appearances for the Yankees this season, Gallegos fanned 10 in 10.0 innings pitched.
Gallegos was 0-0, 0.54 ERA in 13 games for Memphis during the regular season and combined to go 2-1, 2.64 ERA in 30 games in the minors this year between Memphis (AAA) and Scranton Wilkes-Barre (AAA).
During Memphis’ postseason title run this month, Gallegos was a combined 2-0, 2.57 ERA in five games, earning the save in the PCL title-clinching win over Fresno. Gallegos delivered the game-winning hit with a two-out walk-off RBI single against Oklahoma City on Sept. 8 to help advance Memphis to the PCL Championship Series.
Gallegos has been assigned uniform no. 65 and his addition brings the Cardinals active roster to 35 players.
