Slammers Shutout Rascals In Finale

by Ryne Buchanan

JOLIET, IL–The River City Rascals dropped the series finale to the Joliet Slammers on Thursday night at Route 66 Stadium by a final of 11-0, losing their fifth straight game in the process. They were shutout for just the second time this season, and also swept for the second time in 2018.

The Slammers got out to the early 1-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly from Danny Zardon in the first inning, after London Lindley singled and stole second and third base. Chaz Meadows added an RBI double in the second, and the Slammers tacked on three more in the fifth, on an RBI double from LJ Kalawaia, who scored himself on a wild pitch, and later on another sacrifice fly from Zardon. Justin Garcia homered in the sixth to make it 6-0.

Joliet brought in five in the seventh, as the first six men to the plate in the frame all reached base. Garcia, Trenton Hill, and Travis Bolin all had run-scoring singles in the inning.

Slammers starter Corey Kimber (5-2) earned the win, going seven scoreless innings and striking out three. Rascals starter Josh Kimborowicz (3-3) took the loss, allowing six runs in six innings on the night.

The Rascals (30-27) now travel back to O’Fallon after six games on the road. They host the Washington Wild Things for a weekend series at CarShield Field beginning tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 pm CT. Hector Hernandez will make the start on the mound for the Rascals.
