Green Day filled Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre with punk rock and, for many, nostalgia Thursday night at their nearly sold-out performance.
By the end of the steamy August night, no one cared how they looked because they’d just been treated to not one but two full albums performed live and in person by everyone’s favorite punk rock band. Green Day’s on tour this year celebrating the 30th and 20th anniversaries of Dookie and American Idiot, respectively. They also included a newer single, “The American Dream Is Killing Me” from their January 2024 Saviors album, “Dilemma” and others. The fast-paced concert ended with one song cut and a sped up “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” as thunderstorms grumbled.
The Linda Lindas and Rancid kicked the sweltering evening off.
L.A.-based The Linda Lindas started The Saviors Tour with a 30-minute set of their power pop punk to a growing crowd. Drummer/vocalist Mila de la Garza aka, Linda Lindas No. 4, was celebrating her 14th birthday and the band had a “happy birthday” streamer hung in front of her drum kit and sang “Happy Birthday” to her. In support of their forthcoming album, No Obligation they performed the catchy “All in My Head.” They ended the night with “Racist, Sexist Boy,” which helped put this budding group on their path.
Rancid, one of the premiere punk bands of the Gen X generation postured, posed and belted out hits during their too-short set. This 1991 Berkley, California band has endured the decades and still delivers their hard-edged, in-your-face punk rock with aplomb. Songs included, “Roots Radicals,” “Tomorrow Never Comes,” and “Radio.” They ended with fan-favorites “Time Bomb” and “Ruby Soho.”
Fans who stayed until the end were met with a deluge of rain on the way back to their transportation, which didn’t matter as they were already soaked in sweat from a hot night seeing three stellar punk and rock bands of various generations who played their all for this all-ages crowd.
