The Dollyrots Prove Yet Again to be a Must-See Concert

by Carrie Zukoski

The Dollyrots swooped through St. Louis on March 14 on their Hey, Girl tour bringing along The Von Tramps and adding St. Louis’ Bruiser Queen to the night’s lineup at Old Rock House.

Based on Tuesday night’s crowd, L.A.-based punk/pop duo The Dollyrots appeals to a wide age range of fans from pre-teen on up through those sprouting a full head of grey hairs. And it’s no wonder as their fast-paced, high-energy blends an angsty, grungy sound with a strong, vibrant vibe of pure enjoyment.

Layer on guitarist/backing vocals Luis Cabezas’ beaming smiles and bassist/lead singer Kelly Ogden’s endearing stories and genuine good-naturedness drew you in and made their entire set feel as if they were playing just for you. About halfway through their Midwest tour, Cabezas and Ogden treated the crowd to new songs such as “Hey Girl” from their forthcoming album this fall and fan-favorites including “My Best Friend’s Hot” and an energetic cover of “Brand New Key.” They ended the night with “Because I’m Awesome,” which, even if you don’t know is one of their songs you might remember it from the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, the TV show Ugly Betty and many others.

Minneapolis-based sextet rude-girl ska band The Von Tramps filled the venue with 40 minutes of jaw-dropping, unwaning, in-your-face, hyper-exuberant ska rock. The crowd stayed razor-focused on their every move and not even a bit of mic issues distracted from their larger-than-life presence. Inflatable sharks made an appearance during “Shark Bait” and a rousing rendition of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” were just two of the highlights of their set fronted by Jenna Enemy.

St. Louis favorites, Bruiser Queen kicked the night off at 8 p.m. with a 30-minute set of their garage pop rock ’n’ roll. Drummer Jason Potter gave cheers to performing on 314 Day. The duo performed mostly songs from their newest album, Between You, Me, and the Trash. Songs included the 60s beach movie-inspired “Heart Strings” and “The Wild Ones” which they called an epic jam.

Each band complimented the other in sound and energy making for a night of delight and merriment for every age in attendance.
