Gomez, Parsons give Redbirds’ a pair of wins on Sunday

by Alex Coil

The Memphis Redbirds cleaned up the weekend set against the Iowa Cubs on Sunday afternoon, winning the resumed game 8-4 while taking the series finale 3-1. Moises Gomez hit a pair of home runs in game one while Tommy Parsons pitched a solid outing in a seven-inning game two. Gomez now has 36 home runs on the season, tied for the minor league lead.

Game one resumed in the top of the fourth inning of a scoreless game. Iowa scored first on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, but Memphis tallied five runs in the top of the sixth, capped off by a two-run double from Juan Yepez and a two-run homer from Gomez. A Matt Mervis two-run shot brought the I-Cubs within striking distance at 5-3, but Gomez and Clint Coulter gave Memphis a lift in the ninth, with Gomez slugging his second home run of the day and Coulter blasting a two-run shot.

Game two was a seven-inning affair that Memphis won thanks to a great start from Parsons. The right-hander struck out eight and gave up a run on five hits in 4.2 innings pitched. He ran into trouble in the fifth, loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. Iowa brought a run home on a hit-by-pitch, but Zack McAllister (5-3) came in to record the final out of the inning.

The Redbirds offense took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an Ivan Herrera RBI single. Scott Hurst doubled the score with a solo home run in the third while Pedro Pages made it 3-0 by adding a home run in the fourth.

McAllister, who earned the win with 1.1 innings in relief, stranded the tying run aboard in the sixth while Freddy Pacheco (S, 4) closed out the final frame.

The Memphis Redbirds (69-72) return home to AutoZone Park for their final homestand on Tuesday, September 20. They welcome the Gwinnett Stripers into town, with first pitch slated for 7:05pm CDT. For tickets and more information, fans can call 901-721-6000 or visit memphisredbirds.com
