Redbirds and Knights suspended in eighth inning

by Alex Coil

The Memphis Redbirds and Charlotte Knights game on Saturday night was suspended in the eighth inning due to a lighting malfunction. The game will resume at 1:05pm on Sunday with the bases loaded, tied 2-2 in the eighth inning. Sunday’s series finale will start no earlier than 2:05pm.

Memphis took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, placing runners at the corners after a base hit and a throwing error. Cory Spangenberg landed a double down the left field line that brought in the lone run.

After recording their first hit in the fifth inning, DJ Burt crushed a double to start off the sixth inning and advanced to third. That allowed him to score and tie the game on an RBI groundout by MLB Rehaber Yasmani Grandal.

The catcher struck again in the eighth inning. After Mark Payton singled and stole second, Grandal worked a full count and doubled over the right fielder’s head to put Charlotte up 2-1.

The Knights pitching staff retired 16 straight batters until Evan Mendoza doubled to start off the bottom of the eighth. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Andrew Perez walked in the tying run.

Sunday’s series finale will start no earlier than 2:05pm. LHP Connor Thomas will start for Memphis opposite his game one opponent LHP John Parke. For tickets and more information, fans can call 901-721-6000 or visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
