The Cactus Blossoms Filled Off Broadway with Dreamy Harmonies

by Carrie Zukoski

Minneapolis-based The Cactus Blossoms made good on their rescheduled November 2021 concert at Off Broadway last night (June 15) in St. Louis. Which, in a way wound up being a better date as folks had time to soak in their February album release of One Day prior to the band’s tour to support said album. And, as they were recently featured on The Late Show with Steven Colbert, it gave new followers the perfect opportunity to see them up close and in person.

On night seven of their One Day summer tour, The Cactus Blossoms took to the stage shortly after 9 p.m. to a crowd full of friends and fans and performed an impressive set full of favorites new and old. Their sweet, Americana harmonies wafted through every corner of the venue transporting listeners to a bygone era and if you were close enough, Jack Torrey’s seemingly sad eyes pulled you in further to this band that continues to mesmerize.

Esther Rose, now based in Santa Fe via New Orleans, opened the night with a stripped-down 45-minute set to an appreciative, growing crowd. While placed in the country genre, on this night Rose’s sound leaned more toward a soft, singer/songwriter without the twang and a dash of soul to this listener. She remarked part way through that someone once called country music farm emo and how well that suited her. Songs included “Moon” and “Insecure.”
