Gorman, Yepez homer yet again in one-run loss at Charlotte

by Alex Coil

The Memphis Redbirds lost their first game away from AutoZone park of 2022 in game three of a six-game road trip to the Charlotte Knights at Truist Field on Thursday night.

Second baseman Nolan Gorman got the scoring started with a solo home run for the second consecutive night. The Cardinals No. 2 prospect now has four home runs over the last four games after homering in the top of the third inning.

Designated hitter Juan Yepez picked up right where he left off. Yepez hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to give Memphis a 2-1 lead just one night after hitting two home runs and tallying six RBIs.

Starting pitcher Zack Thompson was divine in his second start of the young season. The left-hander tossed 5.0 innings, struck out six batters and gave up one run on two hits.

For the first time in 2022, the Redbirds bullpen was credited with the loss. Brandon Waddell (0-1) made his season debut and allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, which made the score 3-2.

Memphis (5-4) returns to Truist Field for the fourth game of the six-game road trip on Friday night to take on the Charlotte Knights (4-5) at 6:05 CDT. Connor Thomas will start on the mound for the Redbirds, his second start of 2022.
