Novaes Propels SLU to Big A-10 Win

Saint Louis senior Leo Novaes scored in the 83rd minute to lift Saint Louis to a 1-0 victory over Rhode Island Saturday night in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s soccer action at Hermann Stadium.

The win lifts the Billikens to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in league play. Rhode Island falls to 4-3-2 and 1-1 in the A-10. A Homecoming and Family Weekend crowd of 3,192 were on hand for the match.

Novaes scored the game’s only goal at the 82:36 mark. He collected a pass from John Klein, then fired a left-footed shot from the corner of the box that snuck past the Rhode Island keeper.

It was Novaes’ team-leading third goal of the season. He leads the Billikens with eight points (3A, 2A). SLU freshman Patrick Schulte made two saves for his third shutout of the season.

The Billikens are on the road for their next two matches – Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Marquette (7 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 5, at Massachusetts (Noon).
