Beast Beat Chill

by

Two late third period goals by Brampton did in the Chill as the Beast claimed a 3-1 win at the Family Arena Saturday night.  That followed Friday night’s 6-3 Chill victory over the Beast, also in St. Charles.

 BOXSCORE

1st Period Notes

St. Charles was called for a penalty against Micahel Macintyre (tripping) at 4:45.  The Chill killed off the penalty giving up only one good quality chance by a solid Brampton power play unit, which ranks 5th in the Central Hockey League.

The Chill responded by getting a great scoring chance of their own, hitting the post 8:15 into the 1st.

Brampton’s Scott Howes was sent off for slashing 8:23 into the first.  However, the Chill were unable to get any shots off during the power play.

With 4:16 to go in the 1st, the Beast got on the board with a slap shot by Steve Ward from the right point, which was tipped in by Jamie Vander Veeken.

At the end of the 1st period, Brampton’s Steve Makway took a penalty for elbowing St. Charles’ Cameron Cooper.  The Chill started the 2nd period on the power play.

The Chill outshot the beast 7-4 in the first period.

2nd Period Notes

Linus Lundin made a nice save on a shorthanded breakaway for Brampton about :40 into the 2nd period.  The Chill were unable to capitalize on a loose puck in front of the Brampton net when the play went down on the other end of the ice.

About 3:00 into the 2nd, Chill newcomer, Travis Ouellette had a nice wrist shot from the left faceoff circle on a 2-on-1 that was handled by Brampton goalie Kristofer Westblom.

Kyle O’Kane would tie the game at one as he picked up a loose puck to the right of the Brampton goal.  O’Kane skated in front, and buried a wrist shot for his team leading 18th goal of the year, 9:40 into the 2nd period.

Shorlty after that, Ouellette once again made a nice play, making a nifty move to get across the Bramtpon blue line, and then he let go a slap shot, nearly putting the Chill ahead.

With 5:25 to go in the 2nd, the Chill had another great scoring chance with Brampton goalie Westblom having trouble covering a loose puck in front of the net, when the referee blew the play dead.

With 3:45 left in the 2nd, The Chill went on the power play with a cross checking penalty against Michael MacIsaac.  The Chill had several good scoring chances on the ensuing power play but were unable to capitalize.

For the period, the Chill, once again, outshot the Beast 14-10, and in the game were outshooting Brampton 21-14.

 3rd Period Notes

Chill Niklas Lindberg had a solid scoring chance 4:00 into the final period, redirecting a shot right on goal.

Two minutes later, Lundin kept the game tied at 1, kicking out his left pad stopping a Brampton shot.  Forty seconds after that, Brampton’s Brett Smith let go a shot, which Lundin snagged out of the air for a nice glove save.

7:11 into the 3rd, St. Charles’ Nick Schneider took a hooking penalty.  Once again, the Chill shutdown the Beast power play.

The Chill took another penalty when Ouellette was sent off for hooking.  This time, Brampton’s Tyler Butler made St. Charles pay.  Butler let go a slapper that Lundin handled with the blocker, but the puck popped up in the air, behind Lundin, and it trickled just beyond the red line to give the Beast a 2-1 advantage with 5:18 to play.

With 2:11 to go, the Beast took command when MacIsaac passed it from behind the Chill goal to Andrew Fournier who buried it for his 20th goal, and Brampton went on to win 3-1.

In the 3rd period, the teams had eight shots apiece, and for the game, the Chill outshot the Beast 29-22.
