The Gateway Grizzlies are proud to announce that Lukas Veinbergs has been chosen as the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week for the first week of August. He is the second Grizzlies hurler to win the weekly award this season, after Brendan Feldmann took home the season’s initial honors in May.
The rookie right-hander from Pinckney, Michigan was called upon to make his first professional starts this week, and on Tuesday against the Washington Wild Things, he nearly made history, taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the first-place team in the West Division, striking out six batters. While he lost the no-hitter on a double in the ninth, falling just short of becoming the first true rookie to pitch a no-hitter in the Frontier League since Preston Vancil in 2009 for the Florence Freedom, he still earned the win in a 4-0 Grizzlies triumph over Washington to kick off a weeklong road trip in style.
Then, on Sunday, the University of Missouri alum tossed four more hitless innings to begin the Grizzlies contest against the Evansville Otters, eventually finishing with six scoreless innings and another win on the mound, striking out a career-high nine while walking only one as Gateway took the rubber game 9-3, and won the road series at Bosse Field for the first time since 2016.
All told, Veinbergs went 2-0 this week, tossing 14 scoreless innings and allowing only four hits while striking out 15 batters, dominating the two top teams in the West Division standings in the process.
The Grizzlies return home next for a critical series against the Lake Erie Crushers, with whom Gateway was tied in the standings entering Sunday’s action in the Frontier League. First pitch of the series is scheduled for Tuesday, August 9, at 6:45 p.m. CT at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
