Grizzlies Sweep Boomers On Walk-Off Home Run

Cesar Trejo hits walk-off home run in ninth to cap memorable Gateway debut

by Jason Guerette

In his Gateway debut, Cesar Trejo hit a walk-off, three-run home run over the right field wall in the bottom of the ninth as the Grizzlies completed the sweep of the Schaumburg Boomers by a final score of 6-3 on Thursday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Schaumburg scored first again in the contest, as they loaded the bases in the top of the third inning before Brett Milazzo hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. But Gateway starter J.P. Williams escaped further damage, leaving the bases loaded. In the bottom of the fifth, Abdiel Diaz led off the frame with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1, and later in the inning with two outs, Trejo followed by driving in Penner with an RBI single to put the Grizzlies ahead at 2-1.

But Schaumburg got both runs back in the top of the sixth, as Alec Craig led off with a solo home run to tie the game before Clint Hardy hit a sacrifice fly to center field which gave the Boomers a 3-2 lead. The Grizzlies were not done, however, as in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jay Prather walked with one out and Jose Rosario followed with an RBI double to tie the game 3-3.

Then, after a scoreless top of the ninth inning pitched by Sam Gardner (3-1) with three strikeouts, the Grizzlies got back-to-back singles by Clint Freeman and Trevor Achenbach with one out in the bottom half. After Aaron Glickstein (1-2) got a strikeout for the second out of the frame, Trejo came up and hit the second pitch he saw over the wall in right field to secure the sweep for the Grizzlies

Trejo finished his Gateway debut by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and was a triple shy of the cycle. Gateway also finished off their nine-game homestand at 5-4, earning their first series sweep since May 21-22 against the New Jersey Jackals.

The Grizzlies will now hit the road for the next six games starting Friday night, June 24 at 6:03 p.m. CT against the Florence Y’alls. Brendan Feldmann will take the mound for the Grizzlies in the opener of the weekend series.
