Chvrches Light Up the Night at The Pageant

by Carrie Zukoski

A windy, cold winter’s Monday night in the Midwest is hardly the type of night you want to go out. But with Chvrches rolling through town on their Screen Violence tour with Donna Missal opening, suddenly a few uncomfortable minutes outside and less sleep to buoy you through the week become minor setbacks.

With a little more than a week left during their jam-packed 5.5 week North American tour, Chvrches made sure to add St. Louis to their stop to the delight of the packed fans at The Pageant. And wow, did the Glasgow, Scotland-based synth-pop band deliver. The stage setup gave vocalist Lauren Mayberry full run of the majority of the stage with the synths, guitars, and drums all in a row on risers toward the back. And with the way Mayberry twirls and works the stage, she uses all of it and looks and sounds divine while doing so. Clad in a flattering leopard-print mini dress with billowing sleeves, chunky, short black boots, and gems adorning her eyes, Mayberry takes her stage presence as seriously as her music. And, it is a big part of the appeal as many fans were seen adorned in their own style of face glitter and gems.

Chvrches music will engulf you with its dreamy, driving pop and have you dancing around the room in no time. Several songs from their August release, Screen Violence, made their way into the setlist including the singles, “He Said She Said,” How Not to Drown,” and “Good Girls.”

And Consequence of Sound just named Chvrches their band of the year for 2021.

The lighting throughout the concert added dramatic flair to the moods of both Chvrches and Donna Missal’s performances. New Jersey-based Donna Missal opened the night and the joy she finds in performing was apparent from her beaming smiles throughout her set. Drawing on a variety of styles, Missal belted out her songs including the just-released single “(To Me) Your Face Is Love.” Hearing her live gave her songs a new and deeper depth than what you’ll find produced.
