by Brian Kunderman

DALLAS, Texas – In a battle of nationally ranked programs, No. 23 Saint Louis and No. 8 SMU played to a 1-1 draw at SMU’s Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium Friday night.

The Billikens remain unbeaten at 3-0-2. SMU moves to 2-0-2.

Saint Louis had the edge in shots (17-13), shots on goal (6-4) and corner kicks (13-5) throughout the match.

SMU got on the board first when Gabriel Costa scored on a PK in the eighth minute.

A Texas native got the equalizer in the 37th minute for SLU. Mujeeb Murana, from nearby Fresno, Texas, got on the end of a John Klein free kick to knot the score at 1-1. It was Murana’s first goal of the year and the fourth of his career.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half and in the two overtime sessions. SLU keeper Patrick Schulte made three saves for the Billikens.

Saint Louis returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when it hosts SIUE to Hermann Stadium for the annual Bronze Boot match. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
