Billikens Blank Memphis, 3-0

by Brian Kunderman

No. 16 Saint Louis blanked Memphis 3-0 Monday in a nonconference men’s soccer matchup at Hermann Stadium.

SLU received goals from Patrick Wilkinson, Kevin Komodi and Isaiah Parker as it remained unbeaten on the year at 3-0-1. Memphis falls to 0-3-1.

It was the 800th win all-time for the Billikens, who are in their 63rd season. Since 1959, the Billikens are 800-265-113.

Saint Louis was leading 1-0 when a Tiger received a red card in the 66th minute. It was all SLU after that, with the Billikens scoring two second-half goals to put the game out of reach.

SLU goalkeeper Patrick Schulte was sharp in goal, making five saves for his second clean sheet of the year.

Wilkinson put the Billikens on top in the 17th minute with his first career goal. Simon Becher had a touch to a streaking John Klein down the right side. Klein sent a ball into the box to a challenged Wilkinson, but he managed to get a foot on the ball and scored from close range for the eventual game-winning goal.

Memphis played a man down for the final 25 minutes after Toby McCallum was sent off after receiving his second yellow. Moments later, however, Schulte had to come up big on a save diving to his left.

But it was then all Billikens. Komodi registered his first goal as a Billiken on a perfectly struck free kick in the 72nd minute after Becher drew a foul at the top of the box. Komodi tucked one into the upper left corner to give SLU the 2-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, it was 3-0 Billikens. Komodi and Parker played a give-and-go, with Komodi sending one in from the left side of the box to an open Parker. He finished for his first career goal for the 3-0 SLU cushion.

The Billikens return to action on Friday, Sept. 10, for their first road game of the year when they travel to No. 9 SMU. Game time in Dallas is set for 7 p.m. The Mustangs were 2-0 entering their game tonight against Denver.
