Grizzlies Fall 7-1 At Miners

by

MARION, Ill. – Gateway fell in an early hole yet again Thursday night, failing to climb out in a 7-1 rubber match loss against the Southern Illinois Miners.

The Miners started in the bottom of the second, when Anthony Brocato plated Jared Mang on an RBI single. More piled on in the third, with two-run homers from Nolan Early and Luke Mangieri to make it 5-0 Southern Illinois early.

Southern Illinois scoring ended by the fifth inning, when Ian Walters added two more on a single for his fifth and sixth RBIs in the last two games. Gateway’s lone run came on an Andres Regnault RBI single in the ninth.

Grizzlies RHP Jorge Tavarez (2-3) allowed 15 hits and seven runs across six innings en route to his third straight losing decision. Meanwhile, Miners LHP Gunnar Kines (1-2) had a career night, allowing just three hits in seven scoreless innings without walking anyone and tying a career-high 11 strikeouts.

Gateway returns home Friday to begin a three-game weekend series against the Florence Y’alls at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m and you can listen live on YO Radio or watch on Frontier League TV. Coverage begins with the Budweiser Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m.
