Grizzlies Complete Comeback In 6-5 Win Over Otters

by

SAUGET, Ill. – The Grizzlies stormed back from five runs down on Saturday, downing the Otters 6-5 in a thriller at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

For the first time since Tuesday, the first inning ended scoreless. Then, in the top of the 2nd, Dakota Phillips repeated his early bruise from Friday. With Elijah MacNamee edging off first base, the left-handed hitter smoked his second homer in as many days to give Evansville an early 2-0 advantage. Phillips packed some more pain in the 3rd, padding the lead to 5-0 when he cleared the bases on a three-run double.

Gateway finally found the board in the next half-inning, as Ty Moore scraped a line drive over the short wall in right. Later, in the bottom of the 6th inning, Connor Owings made the most of his first hit since June 5th. The second-year Grizzlie slapped an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-2.

The bottom of the 7th inning proved to be the pivotal point in this game. Moore drew a one-out walk right before Chase Vallot came to the plate. The former 1st-round pick, despite falling behind 0-2 quickly, fought out a 10-pitch walk to bring the tying run to the plate. It was Andres Regnault, who proceeded to crush his sixth home run of the season to right, tying the game at 5. Regnault now has a long ball in three consecutive games.

The Grizzlies completed the full comeback from 5-0 down in the bottom of the 8th, taking a 6-5 lead when Nick Rotola — who finished the night with three hits — darted home on a Taylor Wright wild pitch.

Gateway RHP Carter Hayes (2-0) earned the win with a 1-2-3 top of the 8th inning while Evansville RHP Taylor Wright (0-2) got pegged with the loss for allowing the tying and go-ahead runs. RHP Geoff Bramblett (2), making his first appearance since June 9th after coming off the injured list before the game, secured his second save.
