Grizzlies Split Doubleheader With Thunderbolts

by

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – One game featured hits galore, the other a long pitcher’s duel. In the end, the Grizzlies split Sunday’s doubleheader with the Thunderbolts, losing game one 10-5 before winning game two 2-1.

Gateway was strong from the start in the first game. The team batted around in the 1st inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Dustin Woodcock crushed a two-run double off the right field wall, Axel Johnson hit a sacrifice fly and Justin Jones plated two more runners with a single.

However, that’s where the offense ended. Windy City stormed back to tally two runs in the 2nd, one in the 3rd, four in the 5th, and three more in the 6th to seal the win. RHP Tyler Thornton (2-1) got his second win of the season against the Grizzlies while RHP Jack Jett (1-0) was charged with the loss.

Game two was a nailbiter, secured by an Eric Jones solo homerun in the 3rd and a Jay Prather RBI double in the 5th.

RHP Carlos Vega (1-1) earned his first win of the season with five innings of one-run ball. He’s just the second Grizzlies starter to win a decision. LHP Neil Abbatiello (0-2) took the loss after giving up Prather’s double . RHP Justin Watts (2) pitched a clean 9th for his second save of the year.

Every game this season between Gateway and Windy City has finished with one team doubling the other’s run total.

The Grizzlies have Monday off before hitting the road for a three-game series at Bosse Field against the Evansville Otters. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. and you can listen live on YO Radio or watch on Frontier League TV starting with the Budweiser Pregame Show at 6:20 p.m.
