WALK-OFF HIT LIFTS KERNELS OVER CHIEFS

by

The Peoria Chiefs looked to pick up their first win of the season against the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the second game of their series. The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead before a late rally and walk-off double lifted the Kernels to a win.

After a scoreless two innings, the Chiefs got on the board first as Brendan Donovan singled on a fly ball to right field scoring Zade Richardson from second and advancing Jhon Torres to third. The base hit from Donovan setup Alec Burleson to connect on a 2-out single into left field, scoring both runners and giving Peoria an early 3-0 lead.

The Kernels got one run back in the bottom of the third off of a sac fly to deep centerfield. Peoria kept the bats going in the fourth inning as Zade Richardson hit a deep fly ball to right center field, scoring Imeldo Diaz from first. The very next at-bat, Cristhian Longa followed suit with an RBI double of his own to score Richardson from second, giving the Chiefs a 5-1 lead.
Cedar Rapids cut into the Chiefs lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Matt Wallner hit a two-run homer over the right field wall.

In his next at-bat, Wallner hit a three-run shot to give the Kernels a 6-5 lead after seven innings of play.

With one out and the bases empty in the top of the 8th, Alec Burleson stepped up to the plate looking to give the Chiefs a spark. With a 1-0 count, Burleson delivered with a solo shot to right field to tie the game at six runs apiece.

The Kernels put two runners on base in the bottom of the 9th inning with no outs before hitting a walk-off double to left field to claim a 7-6 win.

Peoria will look to bounce back in the series tomorrow night as they play game three of their six game series against the Kernels. LHP Mac Lardner will make his professional debut for the Chiefs on the mound.
