CARDINALS AND ROYALS STEP UP TO THE PLATE TO FIGHT HUNGER

by Mick Lite

Starting today, the Cardinals will battle the Kansas City Royals on the baseball field, and will join forces off the field in fighting hunger in the greater St. Louis and Kansas City areas.  Cardinals Care has partnered with St. Louis Area Foodbank, Royals Charities and Harvesters-The Community Food Network in the “Step Up to the Plate” initiative.

The goal of the initiative is to raise $15,000 for each food bank, which would fund 100,000 meals for the St. Louis Area Foodbank and Harvesters-The Community Food Network combined. The Cardinals host the Royals today through Wednesday and then head to Kauffman Stadium September 21-23 to conclude the initiative.

“We’re proud to join the Kansas City Royals in the important initiative to raise funds and awareness to fight hunger in our respective communities,” said Bill DeWitt III, Cardinals Team President.

“In times of crisis, whether it is a global pandemic or the everyday crisis of food insecurity, people have stepped up to help our neighbors in need,” said Meredith Knopp, St. Louis Area Foodbank President and CEO. “During this time of increased need for food assistance, we are calling on Cardinals Nation to ‘Step Up to the Plate’ to feed area kids, families, and seniors facing job losses, furloughs, and extended time away from schools. We’re grateful to the St. Louis Cardinals and Cardinals Care for helping us provide food and hope to so many friends and fans across the region. Together, we’re leveling the playing field for people throughout the bi-state region.”
