Neither Snow Nor Sleet Nor Slippery Streets Kept Fans from Phantogram at The Pageant Sunday Night

by Carrie Zukoski

Sunday night is a tough night to go out. Add a snowy day mixed with a little ice on top of that and it could be a recipe for attendance disaster. But the true fans (of which there are many) of Phantogram braved the elements and the overprotective weather announcers in St. Louis and were rewarded with a bombastic show on Sunday, Dec. 15 at The Pageant.

Dazzling the crowd with high energy and their gritty dream pop/rock sound, Phantogram punctuated the songs often with the use of large, brilliant bright white lights blasting everyone in the room. The night consisted of a solid mix of older favorites such as “Howling at the Moon” and the swirling “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” and newer material that they’ve been slowly releasing throughout 2019 such as “Into Happiness,” “Gaunt Kids,” “In a Spiral,” and “Mister Impossible.” They teased the audience by saying a new album was coming out sooner than later.

Early on Josh Carter thanked the crowd for coming out on a Sunday night and that he couldn’t remember the last time they were in St. Louis (it was November 2016 at Peabody Opera House now Stifel Theatre).

Relative newcomer Matt Maeson, the Jeff Buckley-inspired alt/indie singer/songwriter opened the 105.7 The Point sponsored HoHo Show night. The early fans already seemed quite familiar with him singing along to songs such as his 2016 hit “Cringe” and the newer “Go Easy.”
