Home Entertainment Project Scarlett is…..Xbox Series X

Project Scarlett is…..Xbox Series X

by Nick Stucker

Earlier this week the Video Game Awards kicked off, labeling recent titles as your equivalent Oscars or Grammy ceremonies (yes, there are game titles that can win simply for their scores). Part of the celebration are developers debuting new titles/trailers throughout the day.

One shocking reveal that wasn’t even hinted at was Microsoft’s new next-gen console, which up to this point, was simply called Project Scarlett. Well, not anymore.

Xbox Series X, or simply as some have just gone to calling it Series X, is the next evolution of the current Xbox One/Xbox One X consoles. Toated as being the most powerful console in the world that will be released, Series X has a debut date for Holiday 2020, which its main competitor, Playstation 5, will be debuting as well. However, this is no surprise as the rivaling consoles have generally released relatively close to one another.

But, this one has us scratching our heads a little. Not just for its design, which currently, resembles a PC tower. The name quite frankly scares us. ‘Series X’; why not just call it Xbox 4? Because technically, this would be Microsoft’s 4th entry console to date. Xbox One X and Xbox One S are just newer series consoles, or updates, if you will. And therein lies our uneasiness to the title.

Series X implies this will be the first in, what we feel, will be a lineup of other consoles. Already, the Xbox One X still fetches for a pretty penny, that’s if you buy it new. Even used, you’re still looking over a $400 purchase. And with the type of specs Microsoft has already unveiled that runs Series X, such a PC setup would fetch well over $600-$800.

The Series X will still have backwards capatability. This means it’ll run Original Xbox games, 360 games and Xbox One games. And while it hasn’t been stated that games just for the Series X will be released, one can only assume that will be the case in the coming future. Original Xbox One consoles aren’t made or supported anymore, and the One S is right behind it with the One X currently out and now the Series X coming out next year.

However, Microsoft did state that Xbox One games will still be released well after the Series X has been released. Such an example was made with the upcoming 6th installment to the Halo series, Halo Infinite. However, Microsoft has also stated that Halo Infinite will be the Series X’s launch title. So for the time being, there’s a lot of mixed signals being thrown around as to how long the Xbox One X, and any of the Xbox One games, have until production for them stops completely, and all focus be directed to the Series X.

The Xbox Series X is slated to be released Holiday 2020 with, currently, an undetermined price tag.
