Jeffrey Wright Cast as Commissioner Gordon For ‘The Batman’

Since the announcement of Twilight’s Robert Pattinson was cast as the titular Bruce Wayne/Batman, replacing Ben Affleck after hanging up the cowl, we all have been wondering what else will happen in terms of casting for this film. Since the 80’s we have seen a great amount of actors portraying the Cape Crusader. With that, we have also seen a few actors portraying Batman’s ‘handler’, the fabled Commissioner James Gordon.

Film-wise, Pat Hingle first portrayed Commissioner James Gordon starting in Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’, opposite of Michael Keaton who portrayed the Caped Crusader. From there, he continued his portrayal in ‘Batman Returns’, ‘Batman Forever’ and finally ‘Batman and Robin’.

After the box office failure of ‘Batman and Robin’, it was seen that the series needed to be rebooted. Christopher Nolan took up the project and brought us a more modern Batman with ‘Batman Begins’. In this film, Gary Oldman portrays James Gordon, however he is not yet commissioner in the first film. In ‘The Dark Knight’, he finally attains this title and secretly works with Batman. J.K. Simmons briefly portrayed the role in ‘The Justice League’.

Now recently, we have confirmation that Jeffrey Wright has been cast as James Gordon. Wright is know for his roles in ‘Westworld’, ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire’. What his capacity in the upcoming film ‘The Batman’ will be still remains to be seen.

The Batman is slated to be released in June 2021
