Grizzlies Fall 3-1 In Evansville

by

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Gateway Grizzlies allowed 10 free base-runners and stranded 10 runners of their own on base in a 3-1 loss Wednesday night to the Evansville Otters at Bosse Field.

Gateway (37-55) dropped its second straight game. Over the first two games of the series in Evansville, Grizzlies pitchers have walked 15 and hit six batters with pitches in 16 innings of work.

Gunnar Buhner had a pair of singles for the Grizzlies’ only multi-hit game; he added two stolen bases. Dustin Woodcock walked three times and stole a bag of his own.

After the Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead on a Buhner RBI single that knocked in Greg White in the top of the second inning, Evansville (55-37) answered with a tying run in the home half of the second and took the lead with two more runs in the third. The Otters scored their runs on two hits (a single in the second and a double in the third), three walks, and two hits batsmen.

Over the first two games of the series, the Otters have racked up nine runs on only 11 hits — and only 12 total bases (10 singles, one double). The game-winning double from Rob Calabrese in the third inning Wednesday was the Otters’ only extra-base hit of the last two games.

Jordan Barrett (4-6) allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings and struck out eight Otters in a losing effort.

Gateway and Evansville will finish their three-game series Thursday with the Grizzlies’ final road game of 2019. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT.
