SAUGET, Ill. — The River City Rascals were swept in a series for the first time this season, falling 12-3 to the Gateway Grizzlies on Sunday in the series finale from GCS Ballpark. The Grizzlies scored seven runs in the seventh inning to break the game wide open, securing their first sweep of the year in the process. Shawon Dunston Jr. had three hits on the night for the Grizzlies.

The Rascals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, getting a two-run homer from Trevor Achenbach and a sacrifice fly from Zach Lavy in the first inning. Connor Owings put the Grizzlies on the board with a two-run blast of his own in the third, and Greg White tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

After the Rascals left the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings, Gateway responded with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh, sending 12 men to the plate in the frame. Andrew Daniel hit an RBI single, Dustin Woodcock homered, Cletis Avery drove in two on a single and Zak Taylor also delivered an RBI single before Daniel added a two-run double. The Rascals again left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, and White delivered a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to put the score at 12-3.

Rascals starter Austin Dubsky allowed two runs over 3 2/3 innings. Reliever Taylor Sugg (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing the go-ahead runs in the seventh. Grizzlies starter Dominic Toppoozian allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision, while Jason Seever (2-1) earned the win out of the Grizzlies bullpen.

The Rascals (52-39) are off Monday and Tuesday, and host the Washington Wild Things for the first of a two-game series on Wednesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT from CarShield Field.
