Martinez, Rascals Blast Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The River City Rascals defeated the Schaumburg Boomers 9-3 on Tuesday night in the second game of their series, avenging a Boomers victory on Monday night. Rascals third baseman Braxton Martinez led the charge, hitting a grand slam and driving in six runs, finishing the night with three hits.

Andrew Penner put the Rascals on the board with an RBI ground-out in the top of the second, before the Boomers took the lead in the bottom of the frame, getting an RBI double from Matt Rose and an RBI single from Nick Oddo. In the top of the third, Martinez cleared the bases with a majestic blast to left field to give the Rascals a 5-2 lead.

They added four more runs in the fourth, getting an RBI single from LJ Kalawaia, a bases-loaded walk from Kameron Esthay and a two-run single from Martinez to make it 9-2. The Boomers added a run in the bottom of the inning, on an RBI single from Dylan Jones, but neither team scored over the final five innings of the game.

Rascals starter Austin Dubsky took a no-decision, allowing three runs over five innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Five Rascals relievers each pitched a scoreless inning, with Anthony Herrera (2-2) earning the victory. Boomers starter Matt Miller (3-3) took the loss, allowing nine runs over 3 1/3 innings of work.

The Rascals (38-30) and Boomers (36-31) play the third game of their series, tied 1-1, tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11:00 a.m. CDT. Keenan Bartlett is expected to take the mound for his second start in a Rascals uniform.
