Grizzlies Fall 3-2 In Joliet

by

After they came from behind for a 3-2 win Friday, the Gateway Grizzlies took an early lead but lost 3-2 Saturday to the Joliet Slammers at DuPage Medical Group Field.

Gateway (24-34) has still won three of its last five games and eight of its last 14.

Brent Sakurai singled to lead off the top of the first inning, then Connor Owings immediately followed with an RBI double — his team-leading 15th two-bagger and 30th RBI of the season — to left-center field.

Joliet (23-36) snapped a four-game losing streak. The Slammers collected two runs on four hits in the third inning and the Grizzlies did not lead again.

Gateway immediately tied the game in the fourth inning on back-to-back two-out singles from Luke Lowery and Anthony Ray. Lowery stole second base before Ray drove him in.

But the Slammers scratched out the go-ahead run in the seventh inning off of Grizzlies reliever Patrick Boyle and held on for a one-run win.

Dominic Topoozian tossed six innings of two-run ball and struck out two Slammers. He did not factor in the decision.

Gateway and Joliet will play a rubber match of their three-game series at 1:05 p.m. CDT Sunday. Red-hot Grizzlies starter Chris Carden (5-1, 3.60) is scheduled to start for the Grizzlies.
