Owings Walks Off Grizzlies Win In Extras

by

Connor Owings delivered a walk-off single in the 12th inning to become the final of many Gateway Grizzlies heroes Sunday night in a 5-4 win over the Southern Illinois Miners at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Owings’ line drive into left-center field scored Dustin Woodcock from third base with two outs in the bottom of the 12th. It was his second hit of the game after a second-inning double.

Geoff Bramblett (2-2) earned the victory with a Herculean effort in relief. The righthander appeared out of the Grizzlies’ bullpen for the third time in as many nights and worked 2 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run. He struck out two and walked two; the Miners (25-18) did not have a hit against him. Bramblett threw 38 pitches — for a total of 63 over three days — despite an injury to his pitching hand.

Zak Taylor, in his 12th game as a professional, overcame a slump of one hit in his last five games to double twice Sunday, including an RBI two-bagger in the 11th inning when the Grizzlies (17-28) were down to their final out.

Shawon Dunston Jr. had three hits and Gunnar Buhner added a two-run single that tied the game for the Grizzlies in the seventh inning and ultimately forced extra frames.

Thomas NicollGrant BlackPatrick Boyle, and Jason Seever all worked at least one scoreless inning out of the Grizzlies’ bullpen, which 7 2/3 innings combined without allowing an earned run.

Gateway pitchers left 17 Southern Illinois runners on base over 12 innings.

After a day off Monday, the Grizzlies will return to action for a three-game series starting Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. CDT against the Evansville Otters for All-American Week at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
