New Artist Spotlight – Soul Numbers by Seneko

by Aaron Mullins

Welcome back to another edition of New Artist Spotlight. Today we are looking at the newest EP from Folk/Alt Artist Seneko titled “Soul Numbers.”

“Soul Numbers” is the 3rd EP from Stan “Seneko” Olshefski. He has spent the last six years of his life devoting himself to songwriting and is often described as “Country meets Radiohead”.

Track List:
1. The Devil You Don’t Know
2. Callin’ of the Cause
3. Jenny’s with Irene
4. Lost on Me
5. One Hot Shot

The first track “The Devil You Don’t Know” features some tremendous use of background vocals in the form of a choir setting. The instrumentation while simple still feels full. Nothing overly impressive about Seneko’s vocal but you can tell a lot of time went into this song. When you get to “Callin’ of the Cause” I get the same feeling in regards to the vocals. It sounds more like talking than it does singing. Sometimes it works but I don’t see it through the first two songs.

I wish I could talk more highly of this EP thus far. The production value is there but overall it is brought down by a sub-par vocal performance in my opinion. Some people might find the vocals fine but I can’t get on board. The same goes for “Jenny’s with Irene” as well as “Lost On Me”, and “One Hot Shot”, which is unfortunate. There is plenty to like about these tracks, however the vocals are first and forward and when the vocals suffer, the album suffers.

Notable Tracks – “Lost On Me” – I find the vocals to be the best on this particular track  it has a great use of background vocals and piano mixed in as well

Styles: Alt Country, Alt Rock, Americana, Folk
Similar To: Wilco, Traveling Wilburys, The Jayhawks

Rating 6/10

Of course this is all my opinion. Find “Seneko” for yourself on social media below and listen for yourself!
